Resetting the Community Council (CC)?

4 years of Community Council - time to reflect

It has been 4 years ago that the community and Original Council decided to kick-start a new council specifically to represent the interest of the community using its own separate fund. It has been quite a ride! We had our ups and downs and of course our fair share of drama.
Most originally appointed Community Council members have since a) stepped down or b) became less available and involved in Grin as project. We solved these issues by transferring one of the keys to a new owner (paoky → @Mokhtar) and in other cases the CC members stayed on as key-holders only available for signing while new community council representatives represented them on a day-to-day basis as CC representatives. To give you a picture of the current setup of the CC, its key-holders and representatives see the overview below:

Current CC key holders and representatives (4/6 MultiSig)

1 @Paouky@Mokhtar :key:@Cobragrin (representative)
2 @davidtavarez :key:@trab (representative)
3 @mcm-mike :key:@renzokuken (representative)
4 Mac/@Neo :key:
5 @Anynomous :key:
6 @hendi :key:@Trinitron (representative)

Of the above members @Mokhtar indicated he wants to fully step down and transfer his key and @Neo has indicated that live does not allow him to be fully active as CC member right now, meaning he would need to have a CC representative.

Our experiences over the last year have shown us that increasingly it has become difficult to a) get sufficient CC members to join meetings and b) get CC key-holders to sign transactions in a timely fashion. We are not yet dead in the water as CC, but we are close enough from being incapacitated for me to start this discussion to avoid us from reaching that situation. We can delay the inevitable by transferring one or two keys and installing 2-3 new representatives, or we can find a more permanent solution by resetting the Community Council

The good news :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

The good news is that we have at least four willing and highly qualified victims … ahum.. I mean volunteers who want to join the Community Council.

@waynegeorge (software engineer, who long followed Grin)
@bruges (aglkm) (well known from making https://grincoin.org/)
@wiesche (C/C++ developer who build a grin web wallet with the flutter framework in dart)
@transatoshi (active community member who build a grin testnet faucet)

If you are a community member who would like to be on the council, this would also be a great time to indicate that wish publicly.
If you are a current CC key holder or representative and you would like to stay involved or you want to step back, please indicate that wish explicitly here in your post as well as indicating how you would like the CC to proceed.
I would like to invite all old CC members/keyholders, representatives and community members (that also includes OC, you are community members) to discuss which option would be best for us to pursue:

  1. Let the CC Continue as is but transfer on or two key and install 2-3 new representatives
  2. Do a complete reset of the Community Council meaning we will make a new MultiSig wallet 4/6 and new CC members will be the key-holders

Note that the second option would mean a whole new set of people will be trusted with the financial future of the Community fund and it would involve setting up a new multisig and transferring all CC funds to this new wallet. This means serious work, but perhaps also a seriously refreshed and empowered Community Council .

Let us know what you think is the best for the community.

I have the availability and desire to join the CC, I’ve only been around since October '23 but i feel like I’m pretty active in the community and am trying to find ways to be more so.

At the least, I’m putting the meetings into my calendar and will start attending those regularly.

I added you to the list of volunteers for the CC in the post above

I like Trinitron’s suggestion to reduce the amount of meetings

Not sure it’s the right time to bring on a bunch of new people when we have nothing to do (cart before horse?).

But definitely need to make sure keys are in good hands, so take care of that yes.

While you did not attend more than 3 meeting since years, we deal with many
things about Grin on the front and under the hood, by the way we changed meeting hours twice for both of you and trinitron join from Usa.
Yet you did not.

That is the reason of now Grin situation.

I condemn you bring my funding request to this subject, see as an attemp to undermine the again CC Grin governance.

Why did you join the CC firstly anwyay ?

I don’t have any ideas really, but meeting every two weeks seems a bit much. Maybe monthly makes sense. It would be nice if the meetings were in a more open place than keybase also. Apparently you can not even build the client from source anymore, so front and backend are closed source software published by Zoom Communications Inc:

I show up when there are things to vote on…

Yes. While Grin has no developers or people interested in doing things, there’s nothing for the CC to do, right?

??? Trinitron had a good point about reducing the amount of meetings. I wanted to quote him directly so I linked the comment. What is going on….

I have a strong POV on where Grin should be headed. I was brought into the CC to represent that to the group. Community Council Candidate: trab

You have things to do.
Framing it as ‘‘there is nothing to do’’ No developers, no development and Grin needs long time hibernation stuff.
You wont attend even 6 month once meetings i bet and contribute. In the mean time things are getting piled up, messing with things left over since last year 2024.

You want stallment and quote me. I wonder what is going on ?

I think we should really need a better management. I think I agree with @trab to keep member meetings ocassionally, not so frequently, and made them available on a social platform thats accesible for everyone and actually works for everyone.

Regarding money management I want to say that in 2023 or 2022 there was a request by @Cobragrin for ~4000$ income for the position he is occupying in this project. That is not normal, and I am telling you with all my respect for your ambition for the project.

When I heard that that is the amount of money you asked and it was monthly not yearly as some of us thought, we stand against it. No one who mattered cared.

Take time and teach me what are you doing and I will do it together with you if you want, but for free. Trust me, there is no need to pay someone to bring news, when this project is in deep need of effort to be put in some other areas.

Lets keep discussion regarding meeting frequency separated, feel free to start a new thread.
I will start a new thread for it, but not now because I do not want to distract from this topic which is more important.

Regarding my own future availability for the CC. I am ok to stay on as CC member although I want to spend less time on governance and shift more of my time towards development. I do not want to maintain my “dominant” position in the CC which is only the result of other CC members not pulling their weight.

You either confusing or blatantly lying gring0. I never requested and get 40000$.
Last year March 2024 -monthly i am paid 700 €U.

This year, i didnt received anyting.

:backhand_index_pointing_up: That is true, he was never paid 4000$ montly. He was paid a monthly rate of 700 euro I think, perhaps at one point in the past 1000 and then for 4 months that could be 4000.
Now lets stick to the topic of the future of the CC

I am sorry, though I do remember you asking 4000$ monthly.

Despite my being a new member of this community (although I have followed Grin for some years) I humbly offer my time and services should they be of help, whether now or in the future.

I didn’t see the notification man. Haven’t been on Github much these days. All you gotta do is ping me. That’s my bad.

What is piling up? I guess I really am out of touch. Sorry guys. Part of the thing is that I thought the meetings were going to be voice calls like the first one we had when I first joined. When it’s just text, you can simply open the app and read the conversation at any point. There isn’t really a need to be there at a specific time. Text is asynchronous.

Both @Anynomous and @Cobragrin have done a lot for grin governance
We shouldn’t break their hearts
Good governance is also the value of the grin project, I believe that some people invest in grin because of its fairness, simplicity and privacy, and some people invest because of the good governance of decentralization.

@Cobragrin serve for years, receiving money as compensation for what he his dedication, he is not greedy.
The community is open and competitive,If someone provides a better service for less money, and the community should vote on it.However, @Cobragrin cannot be accused of obtaining procedurally agreed monetary compensation.

Now leave aside the blame and accusations, lets stick to the topic of the future of the CC,I support the second option,Change brings hope.

I think lack of GRIN at CC Fund can be problem for some people who is not accepting BTC, but we have no Multisig at GRIN from another side, so its motivation and some thoughts came to my mind: Can we hire some blockchain firm to make Multisig for GRIN?

Being Bitcoin holder means being official, its only question when govt will start to take taxes from every sat movement.

To get the discussion back on track. We have four new volunteers for the CC. We need to know how you as community member think we should proceed as Community Council, option 1) or 2)

See the top of the thread for the full post
Resetting the Community Council (CC)?

seems like 2 is more secure?
