I made this topic to announce and keep track of updates on Janus, a Monero<->Grin atomic swap software I am working on for a while. This video is a demo of how seamless it can get. It doesn’t prove or tell anything about the protocol yet. When it’s ready, I will be publishing a beta release on Github. There is no repository yet.
I just wanted to show the community that I work on it, I first started working on it about 3 months ago, and got motivated a lot after the Nonlogs incident and invested my full time on it for a week now.
Unlike other DEXs, Janus doesn’t have peer-to-peer discovery, but centralized boards. Boards don’t have any effect in atomic swaps and are only used for discovery and anti-spam. So that we can have something useful in practice.
For anti-spam, Janus uses Monero proof-of-burns with blind-signature tokens coordinated by boards. You make a Monero burn, and get board-issued stamps for it. Every stamp is fungible once unblinded. Stamps are used for anti-spam, you provide the board with enough stamps that worth your desired burn, the board sees its own signature and nullifies your token. So the board can’t link your stamps with the on-chain burn. Using stamps are instant after you got them.
After meeting peers over boards or outside of Janus, you can do fully peer-to-peer swaps with them by saving them in your peers list and choosing to trust them to not spam you.
It is still very early, but it will hopefully give people a trustless way to buy Grin.
The long term plan is to have more pairs. Prioritized fungible ones, such as Monero<->Litecoin(MWEB), we will see how it turns out.
