Good idea.
Only downside with self hosting a public service, is availability. If we start having hundreds or thousands of users, most residential connections will not be able to serve so many simultaneous connections.
I agree with your plan. Stand something up self hosted and see how it goes, but be prepared to migrate to VPS if the server gets popular.
My concern: users flood to the new matrix server, it struggles under the load, and then the community thinks “oh god Matrix is awful. Lets not do this again”.
I have a HA cluster and dual copper wan with LTE backups so availability wont be any more of a concern than renting a VPS IMO. My whole setup is redundant at every turn as I use it for a personal cloud and am constantly accessing it when on the go.
I would gladly upgrade to a 1GB fiber line also if needed, and the farmhouse has a generator ready to flip on in case of power failure so i think I’ve got my bases well covered. Also my network and whole setup is 100% enterprise so no consumer garbage and I could easily run a branch office with 250 users because that’s what my design goal was and I scaled up accordingly.
The overkill is because I had to medically retire a few years ago from working in IT and the lab keeps me busy and working while retaining what I know from 10+ years running a few SMB IT departments on my own.

That sounds like a pretty great setup; I’m jealous! Well I fully support this. Thank you for taking it on.
I hadn’t realized you can just host through matrix.org like Monero community does so I spun up a space based on the grinprivacy telegram. It can start being used now and I can take more time to do the self hosted setup right and not feel pressured by time.

I welcome any feedback on more rooms I can add and suggestions what to put for the room descriptions and topics. I tried to keep it simple with no unnecessary crap just like grin. All chats are viewable by the public and end to end encrypted.
If people don’t have a Matrix client try out element on desktop and mobile it’s a nice shiny client. I’ll make an official forum post about the chat later today or tomorrow unless moderation is tricky and I need to figure out some tools.
