Best GPU for mining Grin

@babaji, you can extrapolate where maximum difficulty could be based on total GPU population and convert to equivalent solve rate on the Grin network. Maximum Cuckaroo29 solving power could be extrapolated by dissecting Monero and Ethereum network harsh rates divided by the average GPU hashing for that algorithm.

Cuckatoo31 would be harder to determine but you could ascertain the number of 8/11/16gb GPU based on data from https://www.jonpeddie.com/. We know that 2080ti will be in limited supply and there will be heavy demand from AI/ML markets so Grin miners will be paying a premium. This is good news if manufacturers like Sapphire can supply low cost 16gb card in volume before ASICs take root. Ct31 GPU’s have a shelf life of 1 year which will be extended if ASICs don’t arrive later this year.

regarding the asics for c31. imho, it will take some time to design/produce them. and the question is as usually, how fast and in what quantity the supplier can deliver them to the market ?
instead of buying the special rx570 with 16gb mem, i will definitely wait for the Vega VII with 16gb hbm2 mem (should be available within 2 weeks).

@dewminer76 , Radeon7 aka Vega VII is a built by AMD board so it will be very limited in supply. I know the number but I am under NDA.

However, I am speculating that it is a downgraded workstation chip that has 4 compute units disabled. Vega VII is a 7nm shrink of Vega 64 (ie 64 compute units vs. 60 in Vega VII).

yes, it is unclear at this moment if the 7nm vega will be launched with 60 or 64 CUs. actually, it doesn’t really matter for grin mining, the limited availability is more concerning

Interesting that the Vegas are on the way also. It’s obviously a sense of urgency amongst interested party’s to mine, a wise man told me to grab what’s on the market now, buy secondhand if you can and just go for it. It’s a long term game.

The GPU manufacturers are mature businesses and nothing
Like ASIC manufacturers that is almost scammers. All sorts of loose ends.
Who wouldn’t like a paycheque before you have a product? Obelisk my $$$

Hi. We’ll be releasing our AMD RX 570 16 GB card in March for GRIN, BEAM, etc. We’ll do it differently from Sapphire - with all regular ports (DVI, display HDMI), so it has value on the aftermarket, with a 6 pin PCI-E power, so standard mining PSU’s could be used… Also under $300, But maybe something else is needed to make a better product offering? We have some time to collect feedback and make changes, could you please weigh in and give us your opinion?
You can see it here.

actually, the BEAM algo has nothing to do with cuckoo cycles and can be mined perfectly with 4gb version of rx570

Yes, we have customers who bought our miners with 4GB cards for BEAM, but it doesn’t mean you can’t mine it with 16GB cards, does it? These are cards, they are capable of supporting various Blockchains.

sure, i just wanted to point out that the 16gb vram has no impact on BEAM mining. another issue is, that i can’t see the DVI nor DP ports on the card https://www.alphaminer.io/alpha-miner-rx-570-16gb-card-for-gr
btw, i like the design of your miners
i did something similar few months prior you’ve started to sell your miners. just simply disassembled the sapphire nitro’s stock fans and put the cards in a custom box.

Well, thank you. And nice setup! 2 mobo?

There is a note on the bottom of the page that the pictures are for illustration only, they are of our heatsink only 4GB/8GB card. It was designed to be used in our miners and they have forced cooling taking care of the heat. The 16 GB card is designed as a stand alone product and it will have a combo heatsink/fans cooling.

I think there’s single MB with 1-to-3 PCI-E x1 splitters.

Why not to use more powerful GPU core in all that “Grin mining GPU cards”?

It is about value. You get 1/3 gps of 2080ti for 1/5 of the price. No other card comes close to 470/570.

I must say, I’m curious about the claims of 0.42 gps on C31… this would have to be on unreleased miners not currently available. Are you planning on making such software available to people who purchase your gpu? How can a purchaser independently verify that these cards can in fact do that much?

These are preliminary specs based on Sapphire performance. We’ve made a decision to do that early last week, a couple of days before their announcement, but due to Chinese New Year we really had no time or opportunity to even build a prototype yet. We’ve done 4 GB and 8 GB cards, including BIOS optimization, we know we can do 16 GB, but we will need a week or so after the CNY to build it. Right now the goal is to use this pause to see if there is enough interest generated to bother. But in any case no SW is planned to be released,

Good to know, and thanks for your honest answer. I’ll post a word of caution for folks, without better software in the wild, I highly doubt this card can do 0.42 gps. I say that based on vega FE’s that I have barely doing that much, same as normal Vega 64s, currently on the minerbabe OS, the only software I know of that currently supports C31 on AMD opencl. Sapphire’s specs on their 16GB card vaguely mentions tests using software, I will pose the same question to them on the miner side.

Can you tell us more about your company? How long have you been in business, how long have you been designing GPU cards and where are you located?

16gb cards aren’t a standard AMD reference design from what I understand and will need some careful layout as well as some bios modifications. If you are shipping in March, you must have prototypes already done.

Of course. We warn about preliminary specs, do not take any downpayments, and whoever signs up will be able to change their mind once specs are finalized and tested. We’ll also specify how the final specs were obtained, so there are no questions.

Sure. We are in business since Oct 2017, specializing in professional GPU miners and components i.e. PSU’s, chassis, cases for GPU servers. We also sell GPU cards from a few manufacturers (AFOX, Manli, MSI, Galaxy/Palit) we have direct relationships with through Nvidia proper. In a year we shipped over 2K miners and close to 20K PSU’s to the US, Canada, and Venezuela. We have cards for our miners built by a Chinese factory (it doesn’t belong to us, just executes orders), they would be the ones building 16 GB cards as well. Most of the info is on the site, including company principles. You can also check us out with guys from Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Miner Association (BCMA) or in dedicated Telegram groups - Blockchain Miners, Hardware Marketplace, BCMA, GPU Miners Discussion Group, etc…

Sorry, forgot to say where we are - LA and Shenzhen.

Did you ever get your Vega FEs running Grin 31 at 0.41 gps?

I used Adrenalin 2019 drivers and non-Celeron processor.

Thank you for your reply. I will check out your Telegraph group.

However I am very curious about your comment above that you have a relationship with Nvidia and since you did not mention AMD, I am assuming you do not have any direct relationship with AMD?
